Wine.com Introduces Club Claret, Affordable and Approachable Bordeaux

Selected by expert Anthony Foster; Wine.com Exclusive U.S. Retailer
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Wine.com, the nation's #1 online wine retailer, today announced the launch of Club Claret, a new assortment of affordable Bordeaux wines. The Club Claret collection features approachable Bordeaux wines specially chosen by Anthony Foster, Master of Wine and Bordeaux expert. Wine.com is the exclusive retailer of this collection in the U.S. market.

While often associated with grand chateaux and collectible bottles, consumers are returning to everyday Bordeaux to find balanced wines that can accompany meals and enhance the dining experience. Bordeaux is the largest growing region in the world; if it were a country, it would rank number five in wine production. With over 9,000 wineries, the majority of Bordeaux wines are meant to be consumed young, enjoyed with food and without pretension. "Bordeaux can elicit an image in the average American consumer's mind - wines that are exclusive, expensive, and meant only for the cellar. The Club Claret collection brings the best of Bordeaux to the Wine.com customer at accessible price points," says Rich Bergsund, CEO at Wine.com.
"Claret" is the term that was used by the British for red wines from Bordeaux. The name comes from the French word "clairet," which described the dark rose style of wine that was produced in the region in the 16th and 17th centuries. White grapes were planted amongst the red and were harvested and fermented together.

There are seven core wines in the initial Club Claret assortment, including a white and red under the "Club Claret" label, which were blended leveraging a cooperative of local Bordeaux growers. The remaining selection of wines was hand-selected by Anthony Foster, Master of Wine, from family-run chateaux in the region. The wines were chosen to demonstrate the versatility and current appeal of Bordeaux. With prices starting at $12.99, the offering makes Bordeaux wines attractive to a new group of customers. "Our goal at Wine.com is to introduce our customers to the real Bordeaux - real wines from family run wineries, that are made to enjoy now," says Michael Osborn, Founder and Vice President of Merchandising at Wine.com. "Anthony's well-trained palate and decades of Bordeaux experience enables us to offer this selection, which demonstrates why Bordeaux has been a benchmark region for centuries, and will be delivered to your door at affordable prices."

A brief video accompanies each wine on Wine.com, giving the consumer an in-depth look at why the wine was chosen and the story behind the chateau. In conjunction with the Club Claret line of wine, Wine.com has enhanced their national assortment of recent vintage affordable Bordeaux selection.
